Gloomy Sunday

"Gloomy Sunday" is the title of a song from 30's made by Hungarian poet Rezsô Seress. The song was forbidden in Hungary because of reputation as a 'suicide song'. Many people had taken their lives after listening to the haunting melody, or that the lyrics had been left with their last letters. In this installation, this song is playing all the time, at the end of stairways, on the wall, there is framed glass screen, when the viewer climbs the stairs, in front of him appears an image of Japanese girl holding a gun. Japan has tradition of seppuku, this Japanese girl breaks all that tradition accepting European unsacred way of taking own life, in such a gesture lies bit of absurdity, almost like seeng a European performing harakiri. Instead of the girl, visitor is the one who performs a ritual, by climbing the stairs to se the image. The effect of appearing and disappearing of the image is made by using the effect of optical prisma that focuses optical waves in a strict direction, so it is impossible to see the image unless one climbes the stairs. Video Installation January 2006.
