project: Dependence - trams, flags and clock

work № 01 - TRAMS

site specific installation by Mirko Lazović
Opening: Friday 19 April, 2019, 7pm
De Vondelbunker, Vondelpark 8a, Amsterdam

Exhibition: 20 - 28 April, 2019
Performances: 26 & 28 April, 2019

This installation is powered by incidental performers. Vibrations caused by trams passing above the space are amplified and converted in to kinetic energy that makes the floor of the pool tremble.

With that, tram-driver becomes performer without being aware of his input to the work. Besides the tram-driver whom I involved in the work anonymously and without consent, I also asked a performer and composer to inject their own language in the installation by creating another iteration. My installation and body or musical composition form a unity.

DEPENDENCE weaves together notions of sound, space, vibrations, and time into an installation in two acts which plays with the orchestration of the conditions of listening through a spatial composition and displacement.
It channels urban sounds through the infrastructural features of De Vondelbunker, in a conversation between sound and space. This conversation is facilitated by an environmental installation which allows to translate the dull matter of the concrete into vibrant language that speaks to the flesh and to the senses.
The soundscape is always simultaneously a physical environment and a way of perceiving that environment. Here, for the artist, paying attention to how the sound occupies and permeates the space is more relevant than producing new sounds, and the design of the installation is aimed at modulating the acoustic filters of the bunker for us to experience its weight and presence in connection with the life above it.

During the exhibition two guest performances took place:

26 April at 19:00: Remote Backgrounds - music intervention by Jasna Veličković
28 April at 19:00: Oh Di Doo Dah - dance performance by Artémise Ploegaerts
